Creating Nature's Oasis

Your home is your castle and every good castle has its gardens. Having an understanding of what you desire from your landscape goes a long way towards satisfying your delight. Nature, in its many forms has the ability to tranquilize your emotions, your very moods. The wind rustling the leaves, the singing birds, croaking frogs, chirping crickets, splashing of the pond waters, the fragrance drifting from flowers, and the myriad of colors blooming all seasons, all stimulate your senses with delicate pleasures.

The purpose of this garden in Woods of Tabb was to bring Nature home. The garden has a beautiful view of two ponds and a small park. It has both sunny and shady areas. This garden originated 15 years ago when its development was put in my hands, I have thoroughly enjoyed its transformation and the opportunity to maintain it for many years, and I continue to be available as a resource.

Woods of Tabb: 2017 August Yard of the Month

This customer recognized the potential beauty this property had to offer. It initially had a poor designed landscape and minimal landscaping in the back yard. Creating a design/plan required attention to detail, knowledge of horticulture, and listening to my customer. The more concepts that could be satisfied in the design, the happier the end result. I see many people renovate a landscape to sell a house. It is far better to renovate it for yourself, to enjoy your life. So it for you.

We identified what was salvageable and what was not. Due to primarily clay soil, soil preparation had to occur before transplanting to reduce transplant shock. In this landscape we relocated azaleas into the shade where they would perform better and moved the Dwarf Burford Hollies to the left bank. Other transplants went towards the right, and some Hostas were moved adjacent to the garage.

Planning a natural habitat includes a variety of issues, such as evergreens for shelter, berries for food, flowers for nectar, and seeds from flowers as food for birds. Foliage can be food for caterpillars such as Spicebush Swallowtail and Monarch butterflies. Plants can also stimulate your senses. We selected plants to provide colorful blooms all year round. We also minimized maintenance by attempting to allow for mature growth, and we tried new plant introductions. We discovered that new plants are often under-specified when still new. Plants just don't read the labels to know how big they are supposed to be! The soil enrichment results in plants growing faster, and contributed to increased mature size, which caused a little more maintenance than originally intended. However, the plants preformed extraordinarily and benefited from the wonders of added organic matter (compost) to the soil. This landscape matured much faster than one with unimproved soil, resulting in healtier plants, more blossoms, more fruit, and more show. The secret was, and continues to be, in the soil preparation.

There were, unfortunately, some plant failures along the way. Nature does not always cooperate with the best knowledge, experience and careful selection. So, the few plants that did not survive were replaced. There is an evolutionary process as the landscape grows, contributing to the "on-growing" experience. The evolution is thriving today and it had been maintained consistently and diligently. It is a long time coming for this award bestowed by the community. The best part is that these customers have been able to enjoy it daily, and it has been my pleasure working with them.
