The History of Peninsula Hardwood Mulch, Inc.
Peninsula Hardwood Mulch was founded by Larry and Anna Wilson in September of 1988. The Wilson's started the company with one truck, one loader, and zero employees. PHM was originally located at its current site but moved to Route 17 across from what was then Apple's Auto Parts. Back then the company sold Christmas trees in December and housed Peninsula Lawn Care Service. As the company began to expand the Wilson's realized a larger property was inevitable. This is when PHM relocated back to its original site on Lakeside Drive where you will still find us today. During this time the company consisted of a new venture, Peninsula Hardwood Mulch Tree Care Service and housed more than 60 employees. Needless to say, the Wilson's were still trying to find their niche.
1996 became a very busy year for Peninsula Hardwood Mulch. The company phased out of the tree care and lawn care businesses. The Wilson's had realized that their passion was mulch, topsoil, and plants to say the least. During this year the company added another establishment to the already expanding Yorktown location. The company formally known as Sheldon Lumber was purchased so that the company could begin processing it's own mulch material. This was a nice niche to add because our Yorktown location was already processing top soil and other soil mixes. This location offers wholesale and retail sales for the convineince of our Williamsburg customers.
Over the years Peninsula Hardwood Mulch has added many new products to our already existing materials. These products include stone pavers, edgers, bulk stone products, and colorized mulches that we produce in Toano. We have also added equipment and container rental. We have found that this helps to make us your one stop shop for all your landscaping needs. We have also settled at around 25 employees to help make your experience at Peninsula Hardwood Mulch more personable.
